Fiker Think Tank Institute designs and delivers training in research, data collection and analysis, monitoring and evaluation, and report writing. Programmes address the practical responsibilities of researchers, field teams, project staff, and professionals in government and non-governmental institutions.
Training content, level, and duration are determined by participants’ existing knowledge and the tasks they need to perform. An assignment may involve a focused workshop, a sequence of sessions, or training linked to a specific study or project.
Research Design and Instruments
Defining research questions, selecting appropriate methods, understanding sampling principles, and developing questionnaires and interview guides. Practical exercises examine the relationship between a research question, the information needed, and the instrument used to obtain it.
Data Collection and Field Supervision
Preparing interviewers and supervisors to apply study protocols consistently. Topics may include participant selection, informed consent, neutral interviewing, accurate response recording, electronic data collection, field coordination, and quality checks.
Data Management and Analysis
Organising datasets, documenting variables, reviewing data quality, and conducting analysis appropriate to the research questions. Training may cover descriptive statistics, group comparisons, introductory qualitative coding, interpretation, and data visualisation, with software selected according to the agreed objectives.
Monitoring and Evaluation
Developing results frameworks and indicators, preparing monitoring tools, formulating evaluation questions, and interpreting programme data. Exercises distinguish activities, outputs, outcomes, and impact, and examine what different evaluation designs can establish.
Research Reports and Presentations
Structuring reports, presenting findings, preparing executive summaries, and developing recommendations supported by analysis. Participants practise selecting tables and charts, documenting sources, and communicating limitations to different audiences.
Programme Design and Delivery
Understanding the training need — The assignment begins by identifying participants’ responsibilities, prior experience, and the specific tasks they need to perform more effectively. Where relevant, existing tools or work samples are reviewed to identify gaps.
Defining learning objectives — Objectives describe what participants should be able to do by the end of the programme. Content, exercises, and assessment methods are aligned with those objectives and the available time.
Applying concepts in practice — Sessions combine explanation with exercises, case discussions, demonstrations, or simulations. Materials may use fictional or de-identified examples, or organisational documents authorised for training use.
Providing feedback — Participants receive feedback on practical work to clarify errors, explain alternative approaches, and identify areas requiring further practice. Delivery arrangements, language, group size, and technical requirements are agreed in advance.
Assessing Learning and Application
Assessment may include practical assignments, observation, short tests, and participant feedback, according to the programme’s objectives.
Attendance and satisfaction are considered separately from demonstrated learning. Pre- and post-training results can indicate changes in assessed knowledge or skills, but do not alone establish sustained improvement in workplace performance.
Where follow-up is included, the assignment may examine how participants apply the learning and what organisational conditions support or constrain that application.
Supporting Institutional Practice
Capacity development may extend to reviewing working templates, preparing practical guides, or supporting teams in applying agreed procedures. The scope specifies the tools or practices to be developed, responsibilities for their use, and any follow-up support.
Deliverables
Depending on the assignment, deliverables may include:
- A training needs summary and programme outline.
- A session plan and learning objectives.
- Presentation materials, exercises, and participant resources.
- Assessment tools and a summary of learning results.
- A completion report with recommendations for further development.
- Working templates or follow-up sessions where agreed.
Request a Training Programme
Please share the intended participants, their roles and experience, the skills to be developed, the approximate group size, preferred language, and available timeframe. Relevant terms of reference or examples of the tasks participants undertake will help define the programme.
